Maori Head Returned

In New Zealand, archeologists returned from a trip from Europe with an unusual object… It was a head of a mummified warrior or otherwise called a toi moko.

The bones were gotten because of a trade that happened several years ago. The Europeans traded the bones or the heads (dead body (parts)) of people for swords and the weapons they have. The Europeans wanted the bones because they wanted to research on bones and bodies of people from different countries! That is how the archeologists have found these. There is now a law that the dead bodies or body parts should not be token away from their home lands so it is like people want the bodies to rest in peace (RIP).

Thinking hats

Red/feelings-I feel that this is a good thing to do because I believe that the souls of the warriors will be able to rest without any worries about being in a different place and not their home land.

Blue/thinking- I think this is a good law to make.

Green/creativity-Maybe we could also give back the ancient objects from the trade, to the country where the object (thing) came from!

Purple/interesting-I think that the most interesting part was that, people trade bones! I just couldn’t believe it!

Orange/beliefs and values-I believe that the bones of the dead person should be put back to his/her homeland (where he/she came from) and should rest in peace.

Yellow/yellow- I think the good part of this article is that the laws are changing and also, the bones of people are going back to where they are supposed to belong.

Black/negative-I think that it is a bad thing that if we bring the bones back to where they belong, the archeologists can’t research more on them (bones).

White- Archeologists found the bones of ancient people from New Zealand and their bones and a head with tattoos. There is now a new law and it is that the bones or remains of people have to go back to where they belong (homeland).

Questions:

-How did the bones get accepted in the first place?

-Why would the bones need to go back to the bones homeland?

Connections:

-There are bones that have still not gotten found.

– Bones remind me of the grave yard and the grave yard reminds me of people who have passed away and the good memories with them.

Asteroids Fly By

NASA, (scientists) have announced that this year, November, there will be the largest asteroid or space rock recorded, will pass by the earth. NASA has said that the asteroid will not cause any harm to the earth even though it is the largest one that will pass by. This asteroids name is 2005 YU and this orbits the sun within every 14 years. This was discovered by 2 people who research about stars and planets. They discovered this asteroid I n 2005 . This asteroid/space rock is said to pass earth at the distance of 325,000 kilometers on November 8th 2011. If this asteroid does hit earth, it is said to destroy 9.6 kilometers of the earth. Luckily, the scientists say that the 2005 YU is not going to hit earth for at least another 100 years or so. This asteroid passes earth every 25 years and if the asteroid hits the earth, some people say to destroy it with a nuclear weapon before it hits but some say that there is a possibility of pushing the asteroid away by using a special kind of space craft and push the asteroid into a different direction.

Questions:

-Which part of the world will be impacted if the asteroid 2005 YU hit?

-How would you launch a nuclear bomb to destroy the asteroid that far into the sky?

-If you were able to launch the nuclear bomb, how would you know where to launch it and when?

Connections:

-This reminds me of the asteroid that hit earth about a million years ago and how the dinosaurs got extinct.

-This makes me worry about what will happen in the past if the asteroid hits.

-This is connected to a book I read about the crater in Mexico. It is said to be very large!

Thinking Hats:

Red: Feelings: I feel scared because the asteroid might hit even though the scientists say it will not hit the earth.

Blue-Thinking: If the asteroid is said to hit, I think we should use the special space craft to move it away from the world.

Yellow-Positive: It is a good thing that there are more percents of the asteroid not hitting earth.

Black-Negative: I think that it is a bad thing that there is a possibility of the asteroid hitting earth and using the nuclear weapon to destroy it if it hits, will also cause pollution to the earth.

Green-Creativity: I would make a new device or a robot that is very strong so it can stop the asteroid from hitting if it really does.

White-Info: There is going to be an asteroid flying by in November 8th 2011. It might hit but there is a bigger prediction of the asteroid not hitting earth.

Orange- Inspiration: This inspired me because I never new about this asteroid even though I was alive in 2005 and I also found out that there are many more planets and things we all don’t know out in space that we may discover.

Purple-Beliefs/values: I believe that the asteroid will not hit the earth because there is technology we can use and the scientists have also studied and they say that there is less percent for the asteroid to hit, so why not believe them (I do)?

The Grave Search in Mongolia

A research scientist, Albert Lin, is trying to solve a mystery that has still not been found out yet after many other people have tried. He is looking for the lost grave of a Mongolian King named, Genghis Khan. He united several tribes that were at war. Genghis Khan became their leader and they gained power and taking over lands such as the whole of, China, Iran, Iraq, India and almost all of Russia! Genghis Khan was thought of the “father of Mongolia” and also died somewhere that was thought to be Mongolia. The army did not want to tell their enemies that their leader had died so that is why they are thought to burry Genghis Khan secretly so we could not find him. And until this day the scientists have not found his grave.

Thinking Hats

Red- I think that the soldiers (army) did a good thing to hide their boss’s body because if their boss had died, the enemy would think that they have become weaker and attack.

Yellow- I think it is a good thing that they have their boss safely in a grave.

Black- it is a bad thing that the Mongolian Emperor is missing.

Green- I think that if I were one of the soldiers who had to hide the leader, I would leave a letter or leave someone with clues about where their leader is hiding so one day their ancestors can find the leader’s dead body.

White-Genghis Khan united a lot of tribes that were at war and made him self a leader to lead them. Genghis Khan died and got hidden in a grave that the scientists still have not found out.

Questions

-Why did they have to hide the boss instead of pretending that the boss was still alive by making someone dress up like the boss?

-Who became the next leader after Genghis Khan died?

-What happened to the army after the king died?

-Were they defeated?

Connections

-I have seen someone similar to Genghis Khan on T.V and he also led a tribe and made peace to other tribes that were at war.

-There is also someone from a book I have read and his name is crazy horse. A native-Indian that also was the boss of a tribe and he was thought to be a very powerful person

The Prison Break in Afghanistan (CE)   1 comment

The Prison Break in Afghanistan            Karen Egaawa  5/12/11 Newsademic

On April 24th, there were 488 Taliban prisoners that escaped from a high-security jail in the 2nd biggest city in Afghanistan. The escape plan was very well done. There may have been other people helping the prisoners to escape because there were people waiting for the prisoners to come out of the 2.5meter hole they dug in the prison. The escape plan worked well for the prisoners because, there were copies of the prison cell keys and the police think that someone might have betrayed the police and helped the prisoners make copies. This was not the first escape planned in this jail. In fact, this is the second time prisoners have escaped. There was one escape caused by a bomb that blew up the prison gates in 2008. Fortunately most of the prisoners (out of about 1000) got recaptured.

Questions

-How did the prisoners get to dig a hole on a concrete floor?

-Who would agree to help the prisoners escape when they actually worked for the police and why?

-How would someone make copies of a key to get the prisoners out and who would agree to do it? Were they forced?

Connections

-When I was younger, once, I tried to dig a hole for a very                             long amount of time to make it my secret hiding place but it did not work out. In fact I barely got to even dig an inch!

-This article reminds me of an escape plan by digging a hole to get out of a prison because they did nothing bad and wanted to tell the world about what the king has done to them.

Thinking hats

Green/creativity: I would put security cameras in each room and have a metal underneath the ground so no one could dig a hole and if they tried to a security camera would see them doing it.

White/Info: 488 prisoners ran out of jail. Someone helped the prisoners. There was a hole 2.5meters deep.

Red/Feelings: I feel very sad and scared that there might be a prisoner wandering around the world!

Blue/Thinking: I think that the security of the prison should be 2 times better than now because there are already 2 break-outs that have occurred in the past.

Black/Negative: I think this is a bad thing because there are going to be more thieves because of the breakout. We don’t know what the escaped prisoners might do to us!

Yellow/Positive: The positive part was that last break out most of the prisoners were caught again and put in prison for the second time so maybe the police might be able to do it again!

Purple/inspiration: The prisoners inspired me because I never new that they could dig a hole without the guards finding out and how they dug a 2.5meter hole!

Literature-Purple Hat-Poem   Leave a comment

Hello, today I have a poem for my literature poem for my purple hat thinking.

The purple hat represents the character’s beliefs and values, it also represent’s the theme of this book. And I think the theme of the book is to never give up hope. And this is a poem that I made about what Dewey might have thought before he saw the water fall.

I hope you enjoy my poem!

Death awaits in front of my eyes

Death appears in front of my eyes

Death whispers you’re going to die

Death dies first and i’m still alive!

Imagery   1 comment

Today, I have wrote a short paragraph about a tree.

Imagery- A swaying tree full of branches and beautiful cherry blossoms as pink as lipstick is what I see in my head. Its beautiful pick cherry blossoms flutter down like delicate angels as the wind blows them down furiously to the brown sandy ground.

Literal   Leave a comment

I have written a literal description of a bike for my vocabulary homework and also after that please read my figurative description of a bike.

I hope you enjoy it!

LITERAL: This is something you ride on that has 2 wheels and it can go fast or slow either way you want it if you stay pedaling this object. It may have a basket or a bell and does not use up gas or anything that damages this world when you use it. You sit on a seat or you may stand up when you ride it. You have to keep a light on at night if you want to ride on it because people say it is dangerous if you ride this in the dark where no one can see you (cars).

FIGURATIVE: Something you use to transport to different and magical places. It is like a sunglass carriage with only 2 large wheels but still you have to pedal this magical carriage to make it work. It may be like a fish zooming through the street1! It also may be very slow like a tortoise.

Thank you!

Alliteration   2 comments

Today I have 2 alliteration sentence i want to share. It is about water using alliteration. This is the first one I have written and I personally think it is not that bad.

The rising river ripples round and round covering the ground.                                                   The rippling water runs through the raft as if to drown the people on the rattling raft that is about to crack .

Thank you!
